Well apart from perfect soil, great rain fall and an abundance of the warm south-west Aussie sun, it takes a whole heap of work. Delcados are the result of more than 30 years of growing expertise by the Delroy family. Russell Delroy and his wife Jenny planted their first avocado trees on their farm in Pemberton in 1988, starting with five hectares of avocado trees. Today the orchard has more than 340 hectares of avocado trees. That’s around 180,000 – 190,000 avocado trees! The Delroys have spent the last eight years perfecting every step of a Delcado’s journey from Pemberton in southwest WA to plate. They have invested in cutting-edge technology to ensure they have complete control over an avocado from before it is picked, packed, ripened, stored and transported at the ideal temperature to the supermarkets. This ensures Delcados are fresher and taste better. The naturally high winter rainfall is supplemented with water from their dams during the long, hot summers. Those giant karri trees that border the orchard have a crucial role to play here too - filtering and purifying the huge quantities of rain before it is captured and stored in the vast dams that populate the orchard. Well, the Delroys have more than 100 acres of dams on the orchard and in those dams are huge marron stocks. Marron are a freshwater crayfish, similar to a yabby on the east coast and they are hugely popular on high-end restaurant menus. Marron only feed and flourish in the cleanest of waters as they are highly sensitive to pollution. So in a way, they are the Orchard’s ‘canary of the coal mine’. The abundance of marron proves just how pristine the waters are.
